Participants will engineer and construct small sculptures using traditional shop tools and non-traditional materials.  Treasure hunting before the workshop is encouraged but most materials are included in your tuition.

LUNCH:  Soup and salad potluck.  Soup will be provided, students bring salad, bread, chips, or desert.

SUPPLY LIST:  Small tube super glue GEL /  1 package of two part, 4 minute or less epoxy / small wood or tin box, shelf, or other object to be used as a base or container for assemblage  /objects or treasures you would like to include in your sculpture  /  any treasure you wish to share for the “artist exchange table.”

  Workshop outline: Radical Paperclay

A hands on, fun, information packed workshop from this paperclay expert.  Paperclay is any clay to which cellulose has been added.  All traditional, and now radical techniques can be used; pieces can be worked on, added to or removed, at any stage.  This includes dry-to-dry joins, wet-to-dry joins!  Learn about “dip and stick”, foodclay, speed firing, rough throwing, non firing, non-glaze decoration and many more techniques. Gain a complete understanding of paperclay. Techniques will be illustrated, then demonstrated to you step by step, with plenty of time to have a go yourself, with expert support. Create detailed and expressive sculptures with paper clay while discovering its unique energy, resources and time saving properties. Graham has a well deserved reputation for highly informative, but fun workshops.

Artist Bio
Artist and educator Graham Hay has been developing, exhibiting and sharing paperclay sculpture techniques for two decades. He has given over 220 lectures, workshops and demonstrations in a dozen countries. These include co-leading the first international paperclay symposiums in Hungary, the US and Norway. As an artist he has participated in over 150 exhibitions in a dozen countries and his work included in books and public collections in many of these countries. Generous by nature, his information packed website grahamhay.com.au  is visited by 1.5 m visitors each year, while he runs community-based classes from his studio in Perth, Western Australia.  Currently in Perth (pop 1.8m) about 1/3 of all clay used in studios and classrooms is now paperclay.

Artist Statement
“My ceramic paperclay work is an attempt to illustrate an on-going interest in social organisation, I’m trying to suggest the cycles, rigidities and dynamic nature of arts and craft, our society, and myself. In looking for ways to do this, I am inspired by architecture and our unique local plants. Western Australia is now internationally recognised as a ”megadiverse hotspot”. In one small national park there are over 80 unique plant species, which occur nowhere else in the world.

Often I find myself collecting the flower and seeds of Eucalyptus and Banksia trees and bushes as I walk to and from my inner city studio. Given my background and that these plants have literally hundreds of heads in each flower head, have predisposed me to see society as a collection of parts, and to make work out of multiples.”

  This workshop is strictly limited to 15 participants.  Open to all skill levels.  Tuition of $350 covers instruction, materials, and lunch each day.  No work will be fired at Eye of the Dog Art Center.

This event is the annual fundraiser for Eye of the Dog.  Each salsa entry is accompanied by a donation box.  Votes for Top Dog are cast by depositing $$$ in the box of your favorite.  (Bring lots of $$)  The other trophies are awarded by a team of expert salsa tasters.

There is a $10 entry fee for each salsa entered.  Last year donations paid for our new studio front porch, renovation of the old kiln shed into a working studio, and plumbing and electrical improvements for the new outdoor showers.

  The festivities begin at 3 o’clock with all entries due by 4. Judging at 6 and awards ceremony at 7.  Live music and free hot dogs all day.  This is a family event, bring your family and friends.  There will be a clay play table for the youngsters.

          Last year’s festival featured the music of Gery’s Kidz and O’Malarky.  These photos are from 2011.

Spend the weekend with Annie Chrietzberg, exploring the visually & tactile-y invigorating realm of textured pots. This workshop is for everyone, from beginner to pro, and even caters to the folks who attended last year, because Annie will teach new projects! Learn how to make a handbuilt textured cup and bowl with a footrings! Learn how to make a Squirrel! decanter! Annie works with templates, and loves to pass on her fascination of exploring what two-dimensional shape creates which three-dimentional form. Adding templates to your skillset expands your ceramic vocabulary & can change the way you see things ceramically. We will have ourselves a time!

Tuition of $225 covers instruction, clay, and lunch each day.  Pieces will not be fired but may be taken home.

Wheel Throwing Boot Camp Instructor: Bridget Hauser

This workshop is an intensive class in wheel throwing and functional forms, using the methods of “drill and master” to take your skills to the next level. This three day opportunity to work on mastering the principals of basic wheel throwing promises to help all levels of expertise to improve. We will begin with basic forms and move to stacking cylinders to create beautiful pitchers and vases. Each day will begin with drill exercises and work though specific problems in the afternoon and then end with discussing and evaluating the successes of the day.

* The purpose of the work shop is to build skill, it is not intended to produce finished work and no pieces will be fired by Eye of the Dog. Most of our work will be dissected to truly understand form and construction.

Tuition of $275.00 includes clay, instruction, and lunch each day.  Most tools will be available but students may bring their own wheel and/or tools.  This workshop is limited to 12 persons.

Workshop Outline

Day 1

• 9 AM: Begin timed cylinder throwing exercises.
• 11 AM: Begin timed bowl throwing exercises.
• Break for lunch at noon.
• 1 PM: Repeat morning drills using a pointer for consistency in size and shape.
• Save afternoon forms for trimming and handling on Day 2.
• 4 PM: Review results; discuss good studio practices and benefits of working in series.
• Cover work and clean up studio

Day 2

• 9 AM: Begin morning cylinder drill, timed with a pointer.
• 10 AM: Stack Cylinders for bottom of large pitcher.
• Break for lunch at noon.
• 1PM: Create forms with lids, to be finished on day 3.
• 3PM: Trim and handle bowls and mugs from day 1.
• 4 PM: Review results; discuss important considerations of functional forms.
• Clean up Studio.

Day 3

• 9AM: Begin with morning skill drills.
• 10 AM: Finish Large Pitchers and Lidded forms.
• Break for Lunch
• 1 PM: Approach surface work and decoration

• 4 PM Review finished work, Fill out evaluations
• Clean up studio.

Press Mold Making March 31st and April 1st Explore low-tech methods of making textures and capturing bas-relief images to use in your studio. Learn how to take simple bisque molds from materials as diverse as glass, metal, wood, stone and ceramics. No plaster in the studio! Molds that last for years with images that do not wear away. Day 1: Watch demonstrations and then work on mold making. I will present a slide show of images from Texas cemeteries and discuss “Plein Air” mold making. Day 2 : Weather permitting the class will travel to a near by cemetery where we will press mold images from headstones. In case of inclement weather we will spend the day working on vessels with my press molds. Participants may bring objects to class they would like to press mold–but only images with no undercuts will work.

Tuition of $140.00 covers instruction, clay, and lunch each day.  Pieces will not be fired at Eye of the Dog but may be taken home.  Open to all skill levels, this workshop is limited to 12 persons.
